Physicians start house-call concierge business in Honolulu
A new 24-hour private concierge physician house-call business has landed in Honolulu, and is aiming to alleviate patient overload in local emergency rooms or urgent care facilities.
Aloha Physicians co-founders Dr. Pani Shoja and Dr. Samuel Cooper are former on-call concierge physicians from California and Arizona. But when they moved to Hawaii in 2013, they had trouble finding a company that offered that type of care.
“In such a big tourist state, we were both kind of surprised that there are no services like that out here,” Shoja said. “We [ultimately] decided to do it ourselves.”
The doctors visit patients in person and serve resorts, hotels, condominiums, residences, convention and business centers.
Shoja says that calling Aloha Physicians is an alternative to visiting an emergency room or urgent care clinic.
“We’re similar to an urgent care on wheels for someone who gets sick, and they’re either traveling or a resident who can’t get in with their primary doctor and doesn’t want to sit in the emergency room for eight hours,” she said.
Patients may call the doctors for conditions including sore throats, headaches, back pain, food poisoning, nausea, medication concerns, urinary tract confections, cough, bronchitis, allergies, and rash.
Patients are charged on a fee-for service basis, and Shoja says most insurance policies will reimburse the services that can range from $400 to $500.
The doctors will arrive within an hour of each call, she added.
