J. Parkinson, MD: “What’s it like to go from VC-funded to self-funded?”

“When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.” This follows from individuals trying to anticipate the effect of a policy, then taking actions which alter its outcome.

My life has essentially been funded by VCs since 2008 to the tune of $40M of raised capital supporting healthcare companies I’ve founded. Out of the four companies I started since 2007, two were self-funded (my first practice and The Future Well) and two were VC-funded (Hello Health and Sherpaa). I’ve got ten years of experience living in the psychology of both worlds. When I started the world’s first mobile-first doctor practice back in 2007 with a $1,500 personal investment, it caught the eyes of both pop culture and healthcare industry press.
