U.S. SURGEON GENERAL TO ADDRESS NATION’S OPIOID EPIDEMIC AT SOLUTIONS FORUM IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

WASHINGTON — The United States Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Jerome M. Adams, MD, MPH, will deliver the keynote address at a Solutions Forum hosted by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), addressing the nation’s growing opioid epidemic and discussing ways to combat the crisis with emergency physicians.  It’s part of ACEP’s 2018 Leadership & Advocacy Conference.

The Forum’s session on opioids will focus on three key areas:  (1) Putting Prevention in Practice, where innovative approaches will be shared that are being used by emergency departments to reduce patients’ exposure to opioids, (2) Putting Treatment into Practice, that will cover approaches being piloted such as starting Medication Assisted Treatment for opioid use disorders right in the emergency department and (3) Federal Efforts to address the opioid epidemic.

In the afternoon, the Solutions Forum will focus on end-of-life care issues.  Experts will discuss two areas: (1) ways to promote advanced care planning and appropriate end-of-life care, such as new value-based payment models, and (2) different tools and programs for advance care planning being used in emergency departments, and related ethical considerations.
