Group aims to protect doctor-patient relationship, lower costs

Winter Park, FlaUnderstanding that strength lies in numbers, 20 independent doctors from New York banded together last month to form a state chapter of the Association of Independent Doctors, a national nonprofit trade association that works to protect and preserve America’s independent doctors.

The doctors share AID’s goals to slow or reverse the trend of hospitals buying medical practices and employing physicians, and to educate lawmakers and the public about why supporting independent doctors leads to lower costs, and better quality health care.

“Together we want to raise the profile of independent doctors in the Empire State,” said Henry Denis, owner of HITS Consulting Group, a firm based in Garden City, NY, that helps independent medical practices improve their technology systems. Denis worked with pediatrician George Rogu, of Commack, NY, and AID Executive Director Marni Jameson Carey to spearhead the group.

AID sponsor AdvancedMD, a health-care technology company that supports independent physicians with clinical and business solutions, underwrote 50 percent of the cost of the new members’ association dues.

“Every membership matters, but when we get a critical mass in a state and form a chapter, we have a greater voice, and that helps us amplify our message as we reach out to stakeholders and lawmakers,” said Carey.

“Our problem was we needed to be helping each other and working together and we weren’t,” said Dr. Rogu, the new chapter’s president. “Private doctors need a unified voice to talk to the media and to patients. That’s where AID can help.”

The doctors will also benefit from AID’s infrastructure, national reach, and resources. More than 1,200 doctors in 44 states have joined the association since it began in 2013.

During the kick-off meeting, last month, Denis told members, “The NY Chapter is only as strong as its membership, so become active and take a strong role in shaping your future.”

As AID’s sixth chapter, New York joins California, The Carolinas, Florida, New England, and Texas.

Members who opt to make their names public will become part of AID’s online directory of independent doctors, a growing database designed to help patients and referral sources find independent doctors.
