FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MAY 11, 2022 | ATLANTA, GA USA – Every two years twenty-five (25) Physicians are named to the industry trade publication Concierge Medicine Today’s biennial Editor’s Choice Award for ‘Distinguished Physician Leader In Concierge Medicine’. Concierge Medicine Today, LLC., (CMT) is the national/international trade publication for the concierge medicine, private and subscription-based healthcare delivery marketplace. CMT is an advocate #FORDoctors, publishing a plethora of industry-specific news and entrepreneurial articles, conducting rigorous industry analysis and industry polling and surveys to better help healthcare professionals understand the nuances of the ever-changing Patient-Physician relationship.

“I am not a Physician,” said the Editor of CMT. “But I am a Patient and the perspective that affords us is that I know what it is like to sit on the other side of you and on this side of the exam room.”

CMT uses those insights, interviews and education to educate Physicians about their career options. CMT develops industry-specific stories, hosts educational live industry events and conferences, provides practice growth courses online and raises interest and Physician curiosity to help improve top of mind awareness (TOMA) about the subscription-based healthcare delivery space(s). They also provide business insights for Physicians seeking resources related to Physician and career burnout. CMTs efforts have been featured in Times Square on Thanksgiving Day, Annals of Internal Medicine; Outside Magazine; Advisory Board; Wolters Kluwer Library; Practical Pain Management; Town & Country Magazine; WSJ; Financial Times; PatientEngagementHIT; BARRON’S; NY Times; TIME; Huffington Post; BioSpace; CNBC; MetroUK; Medical Economics; CNN Money; Scientific American; NBC News; Consumer Reports; Heritage Foundation; Business Insider; Newsday; Crain’s New York Business; NY Post; Boston Globe; Cardiovascular Business; LA Business Chronicle; D-CEO; Dallas Business Journal; Texas Medical Assoc.; Money Crashers; Chiropractic Economics; Healthcare Finance News; Medscape; U.S. News & World Report; NPR®; Alaska Journal; Financial Planning; Healthline; Capital & Main; More Magazine; Becker’s Hospital Review; Fox Business; Reuters; & other professional media outlets and distinguished medical publications. They also host the industry’s annual medical education conference, the Concierge Medicine Forum held in Atlanta, GA USA where a plethora of international and U.S. Physicians and healthcare leaders present best-in-class medical education to Doctors and their team members. CMTs ‘Distinguished Physician Leader In Concierge Medicine’ recognition is a distinction held by less than one percent of doctors across the U.S. and the world every two years.

said about Concierge Medicine Today the following …

“When peers and organizations within healthcare are looking for exceptional Physician leadership examples to look up to, need proof of ideation that was then executed flawlessly by a Physician, they look to Concierge Medicine,” said the Editor-in-Chief of Concierge Medicine Today, Michael Tetreault. “These are individuals who in our professional opinion have made a significant impact in some shape or form positively on the industry of Concierge Medicine as a whole. In our opinion, they never seek a spotlight but they do deserve our gratitude, respect and applause. Today, it’s no secret that the patient experience in Concierge Medicine is uniquely different. Surveys of nearly 2,000 random individuals at CMT from the past two years has shown that patient burnout is also very real, just as Physician burnout and shortages is spotlighted in most medical news stories. Helping one gives rise to helping the other. It is no secret that when a Patient feels appreciated and invited into a relationship with their Physician they will and typically do more than is expected or anticipated. Concierge Medicine is a unique place in healthcare where Doctors become fans of their Patients rather than expecting Patients to become repeat customers of a busy and distracted practice. Healthcare organizations of the future are leaning-in and learning more and more about this uncommon place we call Concierge Medicine and they’re studying it. They’re finding Physician leaders creating remarkable medical practice environments that Patients actually want to remark to others about. These Physician leaders are often distinguished today by their appreciation FOR their Patients. This personal relationship between Patient and Physician is getting the attention of other leaders both inside and outside of healthcare and they are now taking notes about what is happening here. Are there other Physician Leaders out there who we may have missed or do not know about? Absolutely. We want to recognize them in the months and years ahead at Concierge Medicine Today, LLC., as well. Nominations for the 2024-2026 ‘Distinguished Physician Leader In Concierge Medicine’ application is available here. But one needs to understand that Concierge Medicine Doctors have unique medical environments and practices that have a culture of incredible appreciation and profound respect FOR their Patients. And it is this uncommon, active entrepreneurial genius and gratitude towards Patients verses volume that drives these Physicians inside of the exam room and outside of the Board Room to provide uncompromising customer service, be an example of social grace and create a truly unique patient care experience. In Concierge Medicine caring is defined by what service means. And it is here in Concierge Medicine alone where caring, is part of their Physician leadership profile.”

Concierge Medicine Today’s 2022-2024 Distinguished Physician Leader In Concierge Medicine list looks for Physicians who we believe have made a significant impact on patients, their peers, their community, their state, social media, clinical research and/or personalized treatment, use innovative technology and more. Concierge Medicine Physicians don’t accept the status quo. Therefore, we believe it is important to acknowledge specific physicians and certain practices every two years within the Concierge Medicine space … and hope they continue to reflect positivity, demonstrate kindness towards others, drive innovation in patient care and treatment decisions, continue to communicate with clarity, exceptional professionalism, provide value for Patients and uncover the unique benefits of this at-the-ready industry.

“Each Physician we recognize with this distinction every two years is typically chosen for a specific and/or singular reason by our publication,” said CMT Editor-in-Chief. “What they all have in common however is their curiosity to learn more about medicine, their great big heart for serving Patients and their irresistible desire to be a leader when their patients and the healthcare marketplace at-large asks them to step up to the challenge. Not only have they met this leadership challenge, they’ve sent back maps for others to follow and left their mark along the way.”

The Incorporation of Value-Added Services Inside Their Practice

  • Innovative Services/Marketing Efforts
  • Charitable Participation Efforts In Their Local Community
  • Medical Influence and Participation in Industry Education/Spokesperson Opportunities
  • Community Involvement
  • They Exude Energy.
  • They Empathize. They Uplift.
  • Routinely Look for Combustion Points Within the Patient/Practice Experience. — (Source: Disney Institute’s book “Be Our Guest: Perfecting the Art of Customer Service”). It talked a lot about “Combustion Points” in the customer service process and experience. The author writes “… spots where even a finely tuned process can break down and, instead of contributing to a positive customer experience, begin to turn a guest’s good day into a bad one. It’s impossible to completely eliminate combustion points, but the goal is to stop them from turning into explosion points.” (*page 24)
  • And more.

“A ten minute or fifteen minute visit, are you insane?” said one Physician in Washington, D.C. we talked to recently. “I’ve spent hours with Patients … and at the end of the day, people understand the value of that.”

Only twenty-Five Physicians (Total) Across The United States and Abroad Are Selected By CMT For The Biennial Editor’s Choice Award For Recognition within the Concierge Medicine Industry as Distinguished Physician Leader In Concierge Medicine.

For many years now there have been a growing number of physicians in secondary Concierge Medicine specialties which include: Pediatric Concierge Medicine; Gynecology; Dentistry; Cardiology; Addiction and Recovery Medicine; Dermatology; General Surgery; Spine Surgery; Oncology and others. Specialty practices usually offer the same immediate access, longer appointments, and a proactive health focus similar to primary care concierge practices. Some also offer home visits.

“Two notable observations we encountered throughout our entire review process is usually related to patient comments received prior to transition and staff issues— which seem to plague most medical offices, even those inside the four walls of a Concierge Medicine practice,” said CMTs Editor-in-Chief. “A physicians reputation in the public and online is dramatically different from the patient reviews they may receive prior to a physicians entry into Concierge Medicine vs. after the conversion. Many [physicians] go from zero to hero in the eyes of their patients in a matter of weeks or months after moving into a Concierge Medicine subscription-based practice model. We have also noticed that the physicians staff and their individual attitudes towards patients still remains a sore spot among the doctor’s and patients concerns alike. Even post-transition, when physicians are well into managing their Concierge Medicine members, managing staff impacts the clinic’s annual patient retention and ultimately, their bottom line. However, it is amazing what can be accomplished when Physicians incorporate this healthcare delivery model in their community. It is only now years later, when we are all able to look back and see these dramatic career moves of the entrepreneurial Physician, or DocPreneur as we say here at CMT, that we see why so many patients are choosing to join these experiences that make so much sense.”

“What physicians and healthcare professionals are learning and observing in the Concierge Medicine space is having an impact on the entire healthcare ecosystem across the U.S. and abroad,” said Tetreault. “Every practice, program and Physician may differ, but from in-depth, 90-minute intake visits with your doctor, 30 to 60-minute follow-up visits at your convenience to the use of advanced genomic testing and lifestyle coaching, many Concierge Medicine physicians are leading by example and setting the standard high for patient experience, hospitality, customer service and blending healthcare expertise with more intentional relationship development questions between the Patient and Physician to better understand an individuals healthcare needs. A simply ‘satisfied’ patient is neutral which in customer service terms means an experience in healthcare that most of us are far too familiar with hassles and frustration. Healthcare should no longer get a pass on customer service. A Physician’s (any Physician’s) words and his/her influence and sage advice in our life is far too meaningful to us at their Patients to be spoiled by the distractions accumulating inside the healthcare box. Patient Satisfaction in this field [eg Concierge Medicine moreover] remains exceptionally high, according to our sources, and attitudes toward Concierge Medicine have undergone significant and positive changes in the past two decades and more.”

Concierge Medicine Physicians (Above) list how they provide ‘radical hospitality’ to their Patients each day at the industry’s annual conference in Atlanta, GA USA. Hospitality and relationship is at the core of a concierge medicine office experience. Everything in the practice is intentionally designed to draw the Patient and Physician together to enhance the healthcare experience all while moving the Patient towards better health. Concierge Medicine Today’s 2022-2024 Distinguished Physician Leader In Concierge Medicine list are the Doctors that patients, peers and other healthcare professionals may nominate over a two year period and the industry trade publication, Concierge Medicine Today and others may want to recognize for their impact on the industry. Ultimately, Concierge Medicine Today evaluates and decides those whom their publication believes have made a significant impact on this industry. It is important to note that not every Physician who is nominated makes CMTs list either. The list is not a paid spot, not a sponsorship nor an endorsed list and Doctors do not pay a fee whatsoever to be considered for nomination nor ultimately included on the final selection list. Today, as in years past, this is a list which is respected by the medical profession and peers alike as a source of quality information, insight and is a moment to recognize and support the hard work done by the Physician in his/her community.

“The art of medicine is the application of all this information and skills we learn and relaying this in a humane way to this one patient in front of you,” says Concierge Physician, Dr. Michael Luciano. “Which is the only thing that matters at this moment. I am here for you is what each patient deserves to feel. This in my opinion is what separates the good doctor from the great doctor. That skill is innate. Those going into the field for the right reasons have this within them.”

“Telling Patients to eat right and exercise is a wish, not a strategy,” said one Concierge Medicine Physician on the list. “We really have to spell out and educate.”

“Our ‘Distinguished Physician Leader In Concierge Medicine’ recognition is always tough because we receive so many great comments, nominations and feedback about so many wonderful Doctors,” said the Editor-in-Chief of Concierge Medicine Today. “It’s been particularly challenging over the past couple of years because so many Doctors have sacrificed so much, gone above and beyond to serve their communities to address COVID-19 and other conditions in our communities. All the while on top of their routine workload and daily interactions required by Patients. We recognize that every Doctor today is facing impossible odds, long-hours, putting themselves at risk, sacrificing time with their own family and rarely receiving the recognition, respect or gratitude they deserve and yet, will never ask for. Every [Concierge] Doctor we speak with deserves our gratitude and respect. However, to echo one Doctors editorial statement we recently received, as we’ve learned over the years however, one of the most unique characteristics that makes concierge medicine different from so many other healthcare delivery models and what truly differentiates the good from the great … is that the great ones understand that in today’s culture, ‘It’s no longer about being the best Doctor in the world — it’s about being the best Doctor FOR the world, FOR your Patients and FOR your local community.'”

Concierge Medicine Today’s 2022-2024 list of the Editor’s Choice for ‘Distinguished Physician Leaders in Concierge Medicine’ is a Biennial Recognition. They are working inside of Integrative and Functional Medicine environments; Pediatric Concierge Care; Subscription-based Primary Care; Cardiology; Tropical Medicine; Family Medicine; Executive Healthcare and even Holistic Menopause and Anti-Aging practices.

“We are proud of every Physician named to this ‘Distinguished Physician Leaders in Concierge Medicine’ list,” said Catherine Sykes, Publisher of Concierge Medicine Today. “The listed Physicians are singular representatives of a modern era of healthcare delivery that is representative of old-fashioned values and contemporary leadership.”

“It is our hope at Concierge Medicine Today, LLC.,” adds the Editor-in-Chief, “that these individuals continue to reflect a natural inclination towards entrepreneurial innovation in healthcare, and continue to demonstrate kindness towards others as they always have, challenge the status-quo in healthcare delivery, set an example for their peers of how healthcare could be and should be delivered, drive innovation towards better decision-making, communicate with clarity and exceptional professionalism to both patients and peers, provide tremendous value for Patients and educate others about the unique benefits this at-the-ready industry has to offer.”

“In order to prevent doing harm in medical practices, we need to decrease the number of patients that each doctor cares for daily to give him/her the time to adequately address the patients needs, be able to critically think about each clinical situation, and coordinate care with other practitioners if needed,” says one Concierge Medicine Physician from Connecticut. “It’s not “fair” to patients to rush them in-and-out of the office, merely treating symptoms without getting to the root cause of their complaints.  Building a trusting relationship with patients is at the core of what concierge doctors do on a daily basis.  I’m hopeful that every young physician sees a future in which they can practice high-level medical care, achieve a work-life balance, and form a bond with their patients that will last a lifetime.”

Fast Facts and Media Pull Quotes

“Although Concierge Medicine started out as a concept for the affluent nearly 20 years ago, over time, the movement has taken a clearly middle-class turn,” said Tetreault, Editor of Concierge Medicine Today, the industry’s healthcare trade publication. “Today, we can see impressions of old-fashioned medical care where a doctor carries a medical bag into your home or visits you when you’re in the hospital because it’s simply the right thing to do. However, we also see and hear reports each week that administrative support staff inside these unique healthcare delivery environments and traditional, non-Concierge style environments continue to be a challenge for physicians to overcome. Moreover, patients leave their physician after many years not because of something the physician did or did not do, but because of the staff. In the past several years, we see that there are countless people searching for these types of doctors every day. From the mid 1990’s to present day, Concierge Medicine has matured into countless service variations within our local communities. Annual fees today reflect the level of personal attention and service that a doctor provides and noticeably, patients are deciding to make a personal investment in their own healthcare.”

Industry sources from within Concierge Medicine confirm there are probably around 5,000 to 20,000 private medicine physicians nationally according to the independent industry trade publication, Concierge Medicine Today. Why the numbers conundrum? Well, since there is no federal registry or official national database of these physicians, it is difficult to accurately estimate a precise number. These figures still only represent a minute percentage of the roughly 1,061,141 total licensed physicians* in the U.S., [Source: Kaiser Family Foundation; January 2022] that actively practice medicine today. Industry experts and observers tell Concierge Medicine Today that growth in the provision of subscription private medicine services has been primarily in internal medicine and family medicine, although specialty physician participation is on the rise. Concierge Medicine Today also cautions that there is no way that Internet searches and polling on the Internet can or will result in an accurate head count of these subscription-based business model physicians. Therefore, it is left up to industry examiners, physicians and thought leaders in the space, to accurately estimate and educate others about the history and future of this private medical space. Source: Kaiser Family Foundation; January 2022; Total Professionally Active Physicians in the United States; Data includes currently active allopathic physicians (MDs) and osteopathic physicians (DOs).

According to Concierge Medicine Today, long-term data on these particular subscription-based Patients is still being compiled. Further analysis is encouraged and supported by marketplace consultants and physicians. More data to support these common observations should be analyzed and published. Based upon observation of these trends year after year, these [Concierge] practices are reporting levels or percentages at or exceeding traditional primary care and family practice patient retention and care expectations.
