A paper published in 2025 cautioned dermatology practices against opting out of caring for patients covered by Medicare and Medicaid. In addition to increasing the strain on the health care system, opting out of Medicare and Medicaid may decrease diversity in the practice’s patient population, leading to less experience managing diseases across demographics. They also cited the urgent need for government structural payment reform and other measures to ensure greater access to dermatologic care for all populations.8
